The first Business Information Systems Student Symposium (BISSS) – 2020

The first Business Information Systems Student Symposium organized by the Department of Information Technology of the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce was successfully held on Saturday, 27th of June 2020. The event which was conducted via zoom featured extended abstract presentations, poster presentations and software application development project presentations done by the undergraduates of the Department who had completed their final year research study and the application development project with higher grades.

The Dean of the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, Professor P. D. Nimal graced the occasion as the guest of honour.  The highlight of the event was the speech done by the Keynote Speaker Mr. Shanta Rajapaksa Yapa, General Secretary/ Board Director of the ICT Industry Skills Council on “Challenges and opportunities for IT professionals in the new normal”. The symposium was conducted in parallel virtual sessions for research presentations and application development project presentations using the breakout room feature of the Zoom platform. The event was well-received by an audience of over 100 participants including undergraduates, alumni of the Department, academic staff members of the Faculty and participants from the industry. Following two rounds of evaluation, the best Poster, Extended Abstract and Application Development Project were announced at the end of the symposium.

The Business Information Systems Student Symposium 2020 was chaired by Dr Mahesh Fernando with the support of symposium co-secretaries Ms. Sanduni Senaratne and Ms. Piruni Deyalage of the Department of Information Technology. A technical team comprised of Mr. Chandika Witharana, Mr. Prabhasara Athurupana and Mr. Kavinga Elamulla of the Department of Information Technology administrated the virtual sessions giving a novel experience to the symposium participants.
