JCAE 2020 Doctoral Consortium and Annual Symposium

Doctoral Consortium and Annual Symposium of the Journal of Contemporary Accounting and Economics (JCAE) 2020, co-organised by the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce (FMSC), University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJ) together with Deakin University, Australia and University of Technology Sydney, Australia, was held from 3rd – 5th January 2020 in Colombo.

The doctoral consortium was held at Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce (FMSC), USJ on 3rd January 2020, and it was graced by Dr. U. Anura Kumara, Dean FMSC. Two keynote speeches were delivered Professor Katherine Schipper, Thomas F. Keller Professor of Business Administration at the Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, USA and Professor Ole-Kristian Hope, Deloitte Professor at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, Canada. Five PhD candidates presented in the Doctoral consortium. Approximately 100 participants attended the doctoral consortium including the academics of FMSC, Students of FMSC’s doctoral program, students of the postgraduate students of the FMSC and postgraduate students the other universities. Prof. Y.K. Weerakoon Banda delivered the welcome speech at the doctoral consortium. 

The symposium was held at the Cinnamon Lakeside Hotel, Colombo on 04th and 5th January 2020.  The conference was graced by Dr U Anura Kumara, Dean, FMSC, Professor Mike Ewing, Executive Dean & Alfred Deakin Professor, Faculty of Business & Law, Deakin University, Australia, and Professor Ferdinand A. Gul, Co-Editor – JCAE, Alfred Deakin Professor of Accounting & Finance, Deakin University, Australia. The two keynote speeches of the symposium were delivered by Professor Katherine Schipper, Thomas F. Keller Professor of Business Administration at the Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, USA and Professor Ole-Kristian Hope, Deloitte Professor at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, Canada. While Dr. U. Anura Kumara, in his welcome remarks, highlighted new directions for social science research, Professor Mike Ewing addressed the audience on the importance of collaborative research.

Symposium program consisted of plenary sessions, parallel research (technical) sessions under six tracks, and Forum on Corporate Governance and conference dinner. Approximately seventy five (75) delegates from fifteen (15) countries participated in the JCAE 2020 Symposium. Research papers were presented in plenary paper sessions, and four parallel (technical) sessions. Out of 32 papers, three papers were presented by the academic staff members of the FMSC. Further, from FMSC academic staff members contributed as presenters, reviewers, as discussants and sessions chairs of the symposium. 

A business forum on Corporate Governance on Business Sustainability was held and it was chaired by Professor Judy Tsui, Senior Advisor, Institute for New Economic Thinking, Hong Kong and  Mr. Manil Jayesinghe, Vice President, Board member Certified Management Accountants Sri Lanka and current Ernst & Young Partner, Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, Director- Corporate Affairs, Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka and Mr. Supun Weerasinghe, Director/Group Chief Executive Officer, Dialog Axiata PLC participated as panellists.
