The Pre-Orientation Intensive Course in English for the Intake 2016/17 was conducted by the Business Communication Unit of the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce from 9th to 27th October 2017 for 261 students selected based on their performance at a selection test.
The Course was a full-time residential course designed to equip the students with the skills and knowledge required to cope with English medium study at undergraduate-level (Study Skills) and to communicate effectively and appropriately in English. In addition, to motivate the students, industry experts and senior academics of the Faculty were invited as guest speakers to deliver inspirational/motivational talks of one hour and also movies/documentaries were screened along with worksheets to provide exposure to English Language. A student concert was also organized towards the end of the Course with a view to helping students shed their inhibitions, build their confidence to use English, activate their creativity, and boost up their hidden talents such as singing, dancing, acting, compering, and playing musical instruments.
Upon conclusion of the course, an online post-test was administered to assess the students’ learning outcomes over the period.
