The Faculty of Management Studies & Commerce (FMSC), University of Sri Jayewardenepura welcomed the new students to the faculty for the academic year 2017. The welcome ceremony was held on 02nd January at the Bandaranayeke Hall of the university, and was followed by an orientation programme for a period of one week.
Faculty of Management Studies & Commerce, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, renowned as the center of excellence in management education in Sri Lanka, has selected approximately 1200 students for the academic year 2017. These students have obtained highest marks from the G.C.E (A/L) examination 2015 in commerce stream and their first preference in selecting universities to pursue their higher studies was the Faculty of Management Studies & Commerce of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
The welcome ceremony was held with the participation of the academic staff of the faculty, senior students, new students and their parents, and Prof. Sampath Amaratunge, the Vice-Chancellor of the university graced the occasion as the chief guest. Senior Professor Abeyrathna Bandara delivered a special speech at the welcome ceremony reflecting on his academic career at FMCS for over 40 years.
The welcome ceremony and orientation programme were organized by the staff and the senior students of the faculty under the guidance of Dr. U. Anura Kumara, Dean of the Faculty. The orientation committee chaired by Dr. Aruna S. Gamage, Senior Lecturer, Department of Human Resources Management, comprised of academic staff, administrative staff, members from students’ associations of the 12 departments and faculty students’ council.
During the orientation program, which commenced from 3rd January 2017, a series of lectures were delivered on numerous topics such as study skills, positive thinking, student discipline and student welfare which are pertinent to students as new comers. These lectures were delivered not only by the well experienced academics of the university, but also by some renowned experts in Sri Lanka in their respective fields from both corporate and public sector.
Among them, the featured speeches were delivered by several renowned alumni of FMSC, Mr. W.K.H. Wegapitiya, founder/executive chairman of LAUGFS Holdings Limited, Mr. Sanath Gamage, a personal success trainer and Mr. Sajiwa Medawatta, DIG, Sri Lankan Police. Their speeches not only provided insights from their respective fields of expertise, but also the reflections of the university life. Representing the academic staff of the faculty, Dr. U. Anura Kumara, Dean of the faculty, Professor Hemantha Kottewatta, Mr. Shyaman Udayanga and Dr. Aruna S. Gamage delivered speeches on several topics which the students found informative and thought provoking.
In addition, Prof. Saman Chandra Ranasighe delivered a speech on ‘Jeewithyata Aruthak’ (meaning to life) and it was well received by the audience. With the intention of helping new students to keep their emotions stable during their studies at the university, two special lectures were delivered by Rev. Meegoda Sukitha Thero on “sober university life” and Prof. Gnanadasa Perera on meditation.
In order to prepare the students to keep up with their respective academic programs, a series of awareness building speeches were delivered by heads of relevant sections/departments such as Library, Business Communication Unit, Student Welfare Unit, Information Technology Resource Center (ITRC) and Career Guidance Unit. In addition, several short awareness speeches were delivered by the coordinators/representatives from Students Mentoring Program, University Cultural Center, Gavel Club and Japura Flames.
Additionally, new students had an opportunity to enjoy a musical evening with eminent lyricist Rathansri Wijesighe and an award-winning stage drama ‘Maname’ among the numerous events organized during the orientation week. A special talent show was staged to showcase aesthetic skills of the new students. The event was graced by senior artist Visharada Neela Wickramasinghe and Bandara Athauda, and was coordinated by Mr. L.H.T. De. S. Wickramasooriya, Senior Lecturer, FMSC and directed by well-known musician Manoj Peris. It was great to see the performance of the new students on the university stage in less than even a week of their arrival in the university. Moreover, a ‘sports-day’, was organized with the intention to identify and uplift talents of new undergraduates.
With the extraordinary dedication of the committee, particularly the senior students, the orientation program FMSC 2017, achieved a remarkable success. This was evident from the feedback received from the new students at the end of the program. Overall, by the end of the orientation proramme, the new students were well prepared with necessary knowledge and skills to begin their respective academic prorammes commenced from 09th January 2017.
