{"id":11761,"date":"2026-04-01T22:57:51","date_gmt":"2026-04-01T17:27:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mgt.sjp.ac.lk\/bec\/?p=11761"},"modified":"2026-04-01T22:57:53","modified_gmt":"2026-04-01T17:27:53","slug":"introductory-workshop-on-the-environmentally-extended-multiregional-input-output-ee-mriot-framework","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mgt.sjp.ac.lk\/bec\/introductory-workshop-on-the-environmentally-extended-multiregional-input-output-ee-mriot-framework\/","title":{"rendered":"Introductory Workshop on the Environmentally Extended Multiregional Input-Output (EE-MRIOT) Framework"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <strong>Research Center for Business Economics and Development Studies<\/strong>, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, <strong>University of Sri Jayewardenepura<\/strong>, successfully launched a two-stage workshop series on <em>Input\u2013Output Analysis and Post-Disaster Climate and Economic Impacts<\/em>, in collaboration with the <strong>Asian Development Bank (ADB)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This initiative reflects the university\u2019s continued commitment to strengthening research capacity, policy relevance, and data-driven learning in the fields of environmental and development economics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stage 1: Virtual Workshop on EE-MRIOTs (ADB Statistics)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Theme: Environmentally Extended Multiregional Input\u2013Output Tables (EE-MRIOTs)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first stage of the series featured an <strong>introductory virtual workshop<\/strong> on the <em>Environmentally Extended Multiregional Input-Output (EE-MRIOT) framework<\/em>, a cutting-edge analytical tool used to examine the complex interactions between economic systems and environmental impacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The session was facilitated by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Mahinthan Joseph Mariasingham<\/strong>, Principal Statistician, Economic Research and Development Impact Department, ADB<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The workshop was further enriched by the participation of a distinguished panel of experts joining online:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Nomundari Baatar<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sameeksha Jain<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Angelo Jose Lumba<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Maria Andrea Kristina Onglao<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Their insights and expertise provided valuable global and regional perspectives, significantly enhancing the academic depth of the session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Purpose of the Workshop<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The workshop was designed as a <strong>research-oriented learning activity<\/strong> for Environmental Economics students, aiming to strengthen analytical and empirical understanding of <strong>post-disaster climate and economic impacts<\/strong>, particularly within Sri Lanka and the broader Asia-Pacific region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key objectives included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Introducing the <strong>EE-MRIOT framework<\/strong> as a powerful tool for analyzing environmental-economic linkages<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Providing <strong>Asia-Pacific and Sri Lanka\u2013specific insights<\/strong>, based on recent empirical research conducted in 2025<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exploring policy applications such as <strong>carbon pricing, international trade dynamics, and digitalization<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Highlighting opportunities for <strong>regional cooperation<\/strong> in addressing climate challenges<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Significance of the Workshop<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an era where climate change and disaster risks increasingly influence economic systems, the importance of <strong>data-driven policymaking<\/strong> has become paramount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The workshop, themed <em>\u201cThe Role of Data in Regional Climate Action,\u201d<\/em> emphasized the integration of <strong>academic knowledge, empirical research, and policy application<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By engaging with advanced frameworks such as EE-MRIOT, students gained practical exposure to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Measuring environmental impacts across global supply chains<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Understanding post-disaster economic disruptions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Designing evidence-based strategies for sustainable development<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is particularly crucial for <strong>vulnerable economies like Sri Lanka<\/strong>, where climate resilience and informed policy decisions are key to long-term economic stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Academic Leadership and Contributions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event also featured key academic contributions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Prof M. A. K. Sriyalatha<\/strong> delivered the <strong>Welcome Address<\/strong>, highlighting the importance of integrating research and teaching<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Prof R. M. A. K. Rathnayaka<\/strong> elaborated on the <strong>significance of the workshop<\/strong> for the Department of Business Economics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dr P. P. Lalanie<\/strong> delivered the <strong>Vote of Thanks<\/strong>, acknowledging the contributions of ADB and all participants<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dr M.P.K.Withanawasam\u00a0 <\/strong>Coordinator of Sri Lanka<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Looking Ahead: Stage 2<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the success of the initial session, the second stage of the workshop series will focus on <strong>post-disaster climate and economic impacts<\/strong>, with particular attention to Sri Lanka\u2019s recent experiences and regional policy implications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This collaborative initiative between the <strong>University of Sri Jayewardenepura<\/strong> and the <strong>Asian Development Bank<\/strong> represents a significant step toward <strong>capacity building in environmental-economic analysis<\/strong>. By equipping students with advanced analytical tools such as EE-MRIOT, the program contributes to developing a new generation of economists capable of addressing complex <strong>climate, disaster, and
