The Department of Estate Management and Valuation organized an educational field-based learning programme for third-year undergraduate students of the B.Sc. (Honours) in Real Estate Management and Valuation degree programme, under the EMV 3373 \u2013 Urban and Regional Planning I course, focusing on urban transformation and development trends within Colombo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The programme provided students with a comprehensive understanding of the city\u2019s historical evolution, contemporary urban growth, and emerging real estate development patterns. Through visits to key urban landmarks, including Colombo Fort, Hamilton Canal, Independence Square, and Lotus Tower, students were able to observe the integration of heritage and modern urban transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The field visit also included engagements at Beira Lake and Diyatha Uyana, offering insights into recreational planning and environmental management within urban settings. In addition, students visited the Ambathale Water Treatment Plant to understand urban water management systems, and the University of Sri Jayewardenepura Faculty of Engineering to explore the role of academic and technological advancements in supporting sustainable urban development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This field-based learning experience enabled students to critically examine the dynamics of urban transformation, infrastructure development, and planning strategies within a rapidly evolving city. It further strengthened their ability to relate theoretical concepts to real-world applications, fostering a holistic understanding of urban and regional planning practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
