The Orientation Programme for the newly enrolled first year students of the Department of Information Technology, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, University of Sri Jayewardenepura was held on 12th May 2021, virtually via zoom.<\/p>\n

Dr. W M N Fernando, as the Head of the Department, officially welcomed the new students to the Department and introduced the academic and non-academic staff members.<\/p>\n

A presentation on the nature of the BSc Business Information Systems (Special) degree programme was delivered by Prof. (Mrs) Champa Hewagamage, which included the degree programme structure, extra-curricular activities that the students can engage in within the university, employment opportunities secured by past students of the Department, and professional courses the students could follow while reading for the Degree. Ms. Shehani Senevirathne, Chief Operating Officer of 99x Technology and Director, SLASSCOM was the keynote speaker of the event, who made an inspiring speech on the nature of the IT industry, employment opportunities available within the industry, skills that are frequently sought within the industry and what the future of the IT industry looks like. The President of the Student Association of Information Technology (S@IT) delivered a presentation on various activities and projects done by the association, while encouraging the students to join hands with the future activities of the association.<\/p>\n

A general Q&A session was conducted based on pre-collected questions and concerns the students had, where the staff members and alumni members actively participated in providing clarifications needed by the students. Finally, group discussions were held using the breakout room facility in zoom to enable a close conversation with the students, where academic staff members of the Department, alumni members representing the industry and senior students representing different societies in the University participated to address the concerns of the students.<\/p>\n

The event was organized by Department staff members, Ms. Piruni Deyalage, Ms. Buddhimala Wetthasinghe, Ms. Dilinika Lakrandi, Ms. Sanduni Senaratne, Mr. Prabhasara Athurupana, Mr. Kavinga Priyasad and Mr. Chandika Witharana under the guidance of the Head of the Department, Dr. W M N Fernando.<\/p>\n
