
Lakmal Meegahapola is a Postdoctoral Researcher at ETH Zurich, Switzerland, and will soon join Nokia Bell Labs, Cambridge, UK, as a Research Scientist. He received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from EPFL, Switzerland, in 2024. His research lies at the intersection of mobile and wearable sensing, digital health, responsible AI, and human-computer interaction. Previously, Lakmal was a Student Researcher at Google Research, a Research Intern at Nokia Bell Labs, and a Visiting Researcher in the Mobile Systems Group at the University of Cambridge.
He got his bachelors degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka in 2018. Lakmal has published his work in top venues such as ACM IMWUT (UbiComp), ACM MobiSys, ACM HEALTH, and ACM CHI, among others, and his research has received extensive coverage from both local and international media.
Lakmal has received numerous awards and honors for his research, including being named one of the top four for the ACM UbiComp Gaetano Borriello Outstanding Student Award in 2023, a Rising Star in Cyber-Physical Systems in 2024, the recipient of the Young Investigator Grant from the Novartis Foundation in 2024, and the Distinguished Paper Award at the Proceedings of the ACM on Interactive, Mobile, Wearable, and Ubiquitous Technologies (IMWUT/UbiComp) in 2023. Additionally, he serves as an editorial board member of IEEE Pervasive Computing journal, the Proceedings of the ACM on IMWUT, and an Associate Chair for ACM CHI.
