Course Description

Course Descriptions

MBA 50301 – Accounting for Management

This course deals with the basic theoretical and practical aspects of Financial Accounting and Management Accounting. Financial Accounting aspect includes understanding, analysing, and interpreting financial statements and how accounting standards and recent developments affect the financial reporting process. The Management Accounting aspect is designed to provide students with an understanding of management accounting theory and practice. It includes costing of products and services; using management accounting information for decision-making; planning and management control, performance measurement and recent developments in management accounting.

MBA 50302 – Economics for Management

This course introduces a broad range of economic concepts, theories and analytical techniques. It considers both microeconomics – the analysis of choices made by individual decision-making units (households and firms) – and macroeconomics – the analysis of the economy. The use of a market, supply and demand model will be the fundamental model in which trade-offs and choices will be considered through the theory of cost. Production theory and market structure will be analysed at the firm level. Macroeconomic issues regarding the interaction of goods and services markets, labour and money at an aggregate level will be discussed. The role of fiscal and monetary policies to address macroeconomic objectives will be examined. This course introduces economic thinking and its relevance and application to managing organisations.

MBA 50303 – Management

This is a foundation course that has been specifically crafted to furnish students with a comprehensive grasp of fundamental principles, concepts, theories, and practices within the realm of management. Whether aspiring to managerial roles, team leadership, or seeking to enhance effective leadership, participants will acquire essential knowledge and tools indispensable for navigating the dynamic landscape of modern management. The main objective of the Course is to prepare students as proficient professionals equipped with the requisite knowledge, skills, and competencies. Drawing upon recent organisational episodes, the Course offers insights into contemporary management practices, addressing the evolution of management theories, the VUCA environment, social responsibility and ethics, decision-making, and the key functions of planning, organising, leading, and controlling. Additionally, topics include learning organisations and knowledge management, the managerial role as an entrepreneur, and emerging trends and challenges in modern business management. Utilising diverse instructional methods such as classroom discussions, videos, and case studies, this course facilitates a profound exploration of practical examples pertinent to global managers within contemporary business contexts.

MBA 50304 – Marketing Management

This course provides the students with a basic knowledge and understanding of the nature and the scope of marketing management with special reference to the practical applications in the Sri Lankan context. The course includes the understanding of marketing as a philosophy, skill and managerial function. It also provides the students with knowledge in marketing management activities such as analysing marketing opportunities, developing marketing strategies, planning marketing programmes and managing the marketing effort. Furthermore, it provides an opportunity for students to be exposed to the practical aspect of marketing management, especially in the Sri Lankan context, with some international applications.

MBA 50305 – Quantitative Techniques for Management

In this course, students will learn the theory and application of quantitative methods for managerial research and decision making. The focus of the course is on creative problem solving through the practical application of concepts from Management Science/Operations Research/Statistics. This course develops the skills and perspectives of using quantitative techniques to gain insight into the resolution of practical business problems. This course will cover the major topics in operations research, descriptive statistics, probability theory and inferential statistics. The emphasis of this course is on modelling, spreadsheet/statistical software analysis, and the interpretation of results, rather than on mathematical theory.

MBA 50306 – Finance for Business

Business Finance refers to the broader financial activities of a business. The discussion begins with financial objectives, including how managers and investors use financial statements to determine how well a firm meets its objectives. It takes a broader perspective in considering the financial aspect of a business within its external financial environment, including economic factors, market dynamics, and industry trends. The core concepts of the Time value of money, the risk-return trade-off, and how stocks and bonds are valued are based on these basic concepts. The course also includes the tools and techniques that finance managers use to help maximise a firm’s value, which consists of topics such as cost of capital, techniques of capital budgeting, actions for determining the optimal capital structure, the process firms use to raise capital, and various aspects of working capital management. This course will make use of case analyses, individual and group assignments, and presentations to link theory with practice.

MBA 50307- Managing Business Operations

Operations management is the study and practice of managing the operations of an organisation. It encompasses everything from the strategic planning of operations to their day-to-day management. Operations management is critical for any organisation, ensuring that all operations are running efficiently. This course is an introduction to the concepts, principles, problems, and practices of operations management. Emphasis is on managerial processes for effective operations in both goods-producing and service-rendering organisations. Topics include operations strategy, process design, capacity planning, facilities location and design, forecasting, production scheduling, inventory control, quality assurance, and project management. The topics are integrated using a systems model of the operations of an organisation.

MBA 50308 – Managing Human Resources

Managing Human Resources, popularly known as Human Resource Management (HRM), is one of the most important functional fields of management of organisations, meeting the functionalism of Business Administration. Adequate competence in solving issues/problems of managing employees in an organisation is necessary for anyone who is a current manager or aspires to become a manager in any field and in any type of organisation. This course is about managing employees with the main objective of providing the graduate student with a planned set of knowledge, skills, and attitudes of theory and practice of HRM, predominantly from a functional perspective. This course is generalised in HRM, and it provides a firm foundation to this exciting academic discipline and practice.

MBA 50309 – Management Information Systems

The objective of this course is to give students a broad understanding of the management of information systems and their use in organisations. An information system in this course is viewed as a social system operating within social, cultural, economic and political contexts of organisations rather than purely a technical system. Information Technology is simply considered an enabling tool in an information system. Information systems development, implementation and issues in organisations are examined referring to philosophical, theoretical and methodological underpinnings.

MBA 50310 – Organisational Behaviour

Every individual is a social creature and hence is part of social networks. Interestingly, in the contemporary world, “being in a social network” happens through organisations, particularly business or work organisations, where the individual is supposed to spend much of his/her so-called productive time. In this context, this course is designed to explore and critically analyse individual as well as collective behaviour in work organisations. Simultaneously, the course will facilitate the participants’ understanding of the nature of and the emerging trends in contemporary work organisations. Yet, having recognised the hegemony of Euro-American knowledge of “human behaviour at work”, the course also encourages the participants to critically reflect on their everyday realities in work organisations in the Global South vis-à-vis what they were/are taught under the banner of ‘Organisational Behaviour’.

MBA 60301 – Research Methods

Information and new knowledge are indispensable tools for decision-making and problem-solving that ensure the continuity and sustainability of any organisation. Through the application of scientific methods, analytical and evaluative tools, and techniques, managers can acquire insights into issues that they can use to accomplish their organisational goals and objectives, set correct priorities, adopt prudent strategies and approaches, handle risks, and manage their resources effectively and efficiently. This course will prepare students for advanced research and introduce the principles of business research methods. Students will develop the skills needed to plan, organise, and undertake a business research project. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods are examined. The principles of ethics in research proposal and research report writing are also examined. Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to apply theoretical knowledge and advanced research methods and techniques to their real-life situations and organisations.

MBA 60302 – Strategic Management

This Course is an advanced course which is methodically crafted to furnish students with sophisticated knowledge and skills essential for formulating, implementing, and evaluating strategic initiatives within organisational contexts. The Course explores the complexities of strategic decision-making in dynamic and competitive business environments, preparing students for leadership roles in various industries. Accordingly, this Course discusses the fundamental concepts and theories in strategic management, the strategic planning process, the paramount importance of foresight and adaptability, tools and frameworks for both internal and external. environment analysis, organisational competencies and strategic capabilities, ethical dimensions of strategic decisions, formulation of corporate-level and business-level strategies, and review and control of strategies. Practical case studies and real-world applications serve as integral components of the Course, providing students with a hands-on approach to developing a comprehensive understanding of strategic management. At the end of the Course, students will also possess a well-rounded comprehension of strategic management, empowering them with the ability to think strategically. This critical skillset is imperative for analysing complex business situations and making informed strategic decisions within the dynamic and competitive landscape of the modern business world.

MBA 60201 – Accounting Information Systems Management

This course familiarises the students with IT-based accounting information systems and their role in organisations, particularly in their use in strategic and operational decision-making as a supporting tool for managers. The areas covered are: role and purpose of Accounting Information Systems (AIS); professionalism, ethics and internal controls; transaction processing in the AIS; information technology (IT) and systems modeling techniques-flow charting, data flow programmeming and IT; business processes and IT; business processes (sales/collection, acquisitions/ payments etc.); computer crimes and IT security; decision making models and knowledge management, e-business and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems; and auditing and evaluating the AIS. Further, it focuses on managing the design, control and operation of accounting information systems. The emphasis is on identifying the information needs of decision makers and developing appropriate business process control in the design of accounting information systems.

MBA 60202 – Contemporary Issues in Corporate Reporting

This course provides the opportunity to explore the issues and challenges in corporate reporting from a practical perspective and with reference to appropriate accounting theories and research findings. Hence, this course encourages the students to look beyond the traditional models of accounting to appreciate many influences on contemporary accounting and reporting decisions and the role of accounting professionals in modern organisations. Accordingly, this course examines a broad range of contemporary issues in financial reporting, covering the regulatory dimension of corporate reporting to extended systems of corporate reporting, which capture environmental, social, and governance (ESG) information of corporate entities.

MBA 60231 – Forensic Accounting and Assurance

This course develops in students an appreciation of forensic accounting work, including the nature and extent of financial crime and financial dispute resolution. Further, the course will enable the students to understand the pervasiveness and the causes of fraud and white-collar crime in society, identify the types of fraud and fraud schemes that affect business entities, explore fraud detection and preventive mechanisms, and improve their skills to recognise potential fraudulent situations. Accordingly, the course covers the identification of problematic situations and inherently weak systems in organizations, various fraud detection and fraud investigation techniques, examination of financial statements and analytical techniques, the evidence collection process (physical, documentary and observational evidence), interview and interrogation methods, lost profits analyses, multiple types of litigation support services, the design and recommendation of solutions to minimize risks, and the methodologies used by organizations and individuals in the management of risk associated with f inancial exposures. Further, this course will expose the students to the fundamental legal concepts governing expert witness testimony, the quantification of economic damage in cases and the concepts relating to fraud reporting and the recovery process will be discussed.

MBA 60232 – Strategic Corporate Sustainability Accounting

This course aims to deepen learners’ understanding of strategic sustainability and its accounting dimensions, aligning with recent advancements on both local and global fronts. It places a primary emphasis on the pivotal role of accounting in promoting strategic corporate sustainability, contributing to the advancement of sustainable development with a practical approach. The curriculum covers essential topics, including sustainable development goals, climate change, circular economy, contemporary accounting practices relevant to strategic corporate sustainability, environmental management accounting, sustainability analytics, accounting strategies for the social dimension, and the integration of the three sustainability pillars. It also delves into comprehensive frameworks for overseeing, accounting for, and reporting on sustainability, considering the impact of digitalisation on sustainability accounting. This course adopts a learner-centred approach, incorporating practical case studies and industry insights from practitioners.

MBA 60203 – Big Data Analytics

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles, techniques, and tools used in the field of Big Data Analytics. In an era where organisations are inundated with vast amounts of data, the ability to extract meaningful insights from massive datasets is a critical skill. Through a combination of theoretical concepts and hands-on practical exercises, students will develop the knowledge and skills required to analyse large-scale datasets and derive actionable insights.

MBA 60204 – Business Intelligence and Databases

This course provides a comprehensive exploration of the intersection between databases and business intelligence, emphasising the role of data in decision-making processes within organisations. Students will gain practical insights into designing, implementing, and leveraging databases for effective business intelligence solutions. Through a combination of theoretical concepts, hands-on exercises, and case studies, participants will develop the skills necessary to harness data as a strategic asset for organisational success.

MBA 60205 – Data Management and Visualisation

This course offers a comprehensive exploration of data management principles and techniques, coupled with the art of effective data visualisation. Participants will learn how to organise, clean, and analyse data to derive meaningful insights, as well as how to communicate these insights visually. Through hands-on exercises and real-world applications, students will gain the skills necessary to navigate the entire data lifecycle, from acquisition and cleaning to visualisation and interpretation.

MBA 60206 – Information Law

Information Law aims to expand candidates’ knowledge regarding the salient aspects which lead to the development and continuous growth of Information Law (IT law) in Sri Lanka and at an international level. This course will provide candidates with a thorough understanding of the relationship between law and IT within the areas of electronic communications, intellectual property, data protection & privacy, computer crimes, and electronic commerce. Candidates will gain in-depth knowledge of the ways in which IT challenges the application and enforcement of law. Therefore, candidates will clarify and critically assess the emerging legal challenges posed by the IT field in the aforementioned areas while also evaluating the efficacy of law in the digital environment.

MBA 60233 – Business Process Mining in Big Data

Sustainable management is one of the most momentous branches of the business sector, and it explains how business organisations can succeed in their businesses while protecting the natural environment and society at large, since businesses become one of the responsible parties that decide humanity’s survival on Earth. Hence, the course comprises a detailed understanding of theories, concepts, and skill development that help in realising future operations and practices of sustainable business development. Moreover, the course will help students learn how to apply sustainability to their business operations and practices to create a better future for society by positively addressing environmental-related issues. The main areas explored by the course are sustainability and sustainable development goals (SDGs), business impacts on the environment, triple bottom line and creating shared value strategies, innovations for sustainability, system thinking and circular business models, sustainable design strategies, sustainable consumption and production, measuring sustainable performance, key challenges emerging trends and opportunities in business sustainability, ESG and sustainability reporting, and best practices for applications.

MBA 60240 – Financial Markets and Institutions

This course examines the structure, functions, and operations of financial markets and financial institutions within modern financial systems. It explores how financial markets facilitate the efficient allocation of funds between surplus and deficit units and how financial institutions contribute to economic stability and growth. The course also examines interest rate determination, money and capital market operations, financial intermediation, and financial risk management. Attention is paid to Sri Lanka’s financial system, including the role of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka and the Colombo Stock Exchange. In addition, the course introduces the legal and regulatory framework governing financial institutions, including compliance requirements, consumer protection, and anti-money-laundering regulations.

MBA 60210 – Financial Analysis and Planning

This course develops core competencies in analysing corporate financial performance, diagnosing strategic drivers of value creation, and assessing financial health and risk. Students learn to connect business strategy with accounting choices and reported performance, conduct rigorous ratio and financial statement analysis, evaluate ESG factors as drivers of long-term performance, and assess financial distress risk. The course includes targeted modules on business forecasting and technical analysis to support strategic and investment decision-making. It complements existing Corporate Finance and Investment Analysis courses by focusing on financial statement diagnostics, performance attribution, sustainability integration, and risk assessment.
