Orientation Session: Introduction to MBA/M.Sc. in Management Programme – April 2025 Intake

A special orientation session for the newly enrolled students of the April 2025 intake in the MBA/M.Sc. in Management Programme was successfully conducted on April 27th, 2025, from 3.30 PM to 5.30 PM at Fayol Hall. It provided an excellent opportunity for students to gain a deeper understanding of the programme.

The primary objective of this session was to offer students a comprehensive overview of the curriculum, course structure, and administrative procedures, ensuring a seamless academic experience.

The session was led by Professor M.A. Kumuduni Sriyalatha, Programme Coordinator, and Ms. W.R.M. Shehani Shanika, Assistant Coordinator, who provided valuable insights into the curriculum, academic expectations, and essential administrative formalities that students must adhere to.

This orientation proved to be highly beneficial, enabling students to familiarize themselves with the programme’s framework and gain essential guidance for their academic journey.

The MBA programme looks forward to welcoming new students and fostering an enriching learning experience throughout the course of the programme.

Successful Completion of the Study Tour to Thailand– MBA / M.Sc. in Management Programme – 2022 Batch

A study tour was organized for the students of the MBA / MSc in Management 2022 batch program by the MBA Unit. It was a visit to Thailand from 3rd to 7th March 2025 with the participation of 20 students and 04 professors representing the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. It was a challenging task to organize a tour of this nature during the economic crisis and it was the second foreign study tour after the COVID–19 pandemic.

The main aim of the study tour was to enable the students to get foreign exposure and to relate theory to practice during the different visits to organizations such as universities, factories, theme parks, and resorts. Sharing their views, students highlighted that this tour is one of the most exciting and enjoyable life experiences.

While being in Thailand we visited the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) with the intention of developing partnerships between the two universities. Discussions were held to understand the possibilities of conducting collaborative research, engaging students in debate programs, summer camp activities as well as participating in international academic conferences. These discussions were led by NIDA university representatives, namely Assistant Professor Dr. Pattrawut Charoenroop, Assistant to the President for International Affairs, and Assistant Professor Dr. Sarawut Chansuwan, Director of the NIDA Smart Compact City Center. We had a chance to visit the Smart City Development Research Center with Mr. Pornchai Pruksasatnon, consulting team of NIDA Smart Compact City Center. Apart from being at the NIDA University, we had the opportunity to visit Ichitan Group Co., Ltd, Food processing and packaged foods Company –  BangkokThailandThis is the biggest and the most long-standing  Company and it is a Thai beverage company that manufactures green tea drinks, herbal drinks, fruit drinks, and energy drinks in Thailand.   Without confining only to study related matters students had a chance to visit famous temples in Thailand, Dream World Bangkok and enjoy the most outstanding view of bangkok by the river – Dinner cruise.  

A few professors namely M A Kumudini Sriyalatha (Coordinator, MBA/M.Sc. Programme) Upuli Perera, (Chairman, Board of Study, Faculty of Management Studies), Lalitha S Fernando, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, and Chandana Gunatilake,  also joined the study tour representing the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce.

Two-Day Local Tour & Workshop for MBA/M.Sc. in Management 2021 Batch

The MBA/M.Sc. in Management 2021 batch recently embarked on a two-day local tour on 25th and 26th of January 2025 at Hotel Sigiriya Village, combining relaxation with insightful learning. A key highlight of the event was a workshop on Gender Diversity and Inclusion in Workplaces, where students actively engaged in discussions and presentations on real-life incidents related to workplace diversity. This workshop was conducted by Prof. Hemmalie Gunathilake, Senior Lecturer, Department of Business Administration, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, and Dr. Iresha Atthanayake, Senior Lecturer, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering Technology, Open University with the support of Prof. Dushan Jayawickrama, Dean of the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. The workshop fostered critical thinking and awareness, encouraging graduates to create more inclusive professional and work environments. This Programme was graced by the presence of Prof. Kumuduni Sriyalatha, Coordinator, MBA/M.Sc. Programme, and Ms. WRM Shehani Shanika, Assistant Coordinator, MBA/M.Sc. Programme. The tour also provided a great opportunity for networking and team-building, making it a memorable and enriching experience for all participants.

Successful Completion of the Study Tour to Malaysia – MBA / M.Sc. in Management Programme – 2024

A study tour was organized for the students of the MBA / MSc in Management program by the MBA Unit. It was a visit to Malaysia from 3rd to 7th June 2024 with the participation of more than 40 students and 05 professors representing the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. It was a challenging task to organize a tour of this nature during the economic crisis and it was the first foreign study tour after the COVID–19 pandemic.

The main aim of the study tour was to enable the students to get foreign exposure and to relate theory to practice during the different visits to organizations such as universities, factories, theme parks, and resorts. Sharing their views, students highlighted that this tour is one of the most exciting and enjoyable life experiences.

While being in Malaysia we visited INTI International University with the intention of developing partnerships between the two universities. Discussions were held to understand the possibilities of conducting collaborative research as well as organizing student exchange programs. These discussions were led by INTI university representatives, namely Prof. Goh Khang Wen (Pro Vice Chancellor of Global Engagement), and Prof. Asokan Vasudevan (Director of International Relations and Collaboration). 

Apart from being at the INTI University, we had the opportunity to visit Royal Selangor Pewter Factory – Kuala Lumpur. This is the biggest and the most long-standing pewter craft company in Malaysia. Without confining only to study related matters students had a chance to visit Batu Caves, Genting Highlands with cable car ride and Sunway Lagoon theme park.

A few professors namely Wasantha Perera, (Chairman, Board of Study, Faculty of Graduate Studies), Saman Yapa, (Former Chairman, Board of Study, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce), Y.K Weerakoon Banda, Hemamalie Gunatilake, and Kumudini Sriyalatha (Coordinator, MBA/M.Sc. Programme) also joined the study tour representing the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce.

Manusath Apeksha Dahara program organized by MBA batch of 2023

The Manusath Apeksha Dahara program, held on the 1st of May from 10 am to 5 pm at Apeksha Hospital Maharagama, epitomized a harmonious collaboration between the MBA batch of 2023 and Apeksha Hospital Maharagama. This initiative encompassed various facets, including a successful music therapy session, provision of requested items to the hospital, distribution of medications, and blood donation to the hospital’s blood bank. The seamless execution of the program owed much to the active involvement of distinguished lecturers from the esteemed Japura MBA/M.Sc. program.  Among them were Dr. Dushan Jayawickrama, Dean of the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, Prof. Kumuduni Sriyalatha, Coordinator MBA/MSc in Management Program, Prof. Sudath M. Amarasena, Mr. Dilan Rathnayaka (Senior Lecturer), Ms. W. R. M. Shehani Shanika, Assistant Coordinator MBA/MSc in Management Program. Furthermore, the participation of J’pura Masters Alumni Association members and fellow batch mates added to the collective effort, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie.  Through the Manusath Apeksha Dahara program, the MBA batch of 2023, alongside Apeksha Hospital Maharagama, demonstrated a commitment to holistic healthcare and social responsibility, leaving a positive impact on both the institution and the broader community.

MBA lectures restarted after the New Year Holidays

MBA lectures for the 2022 & 2024 batches officially restarted after the New Year vacation on Saturday, 27th April 2024. The students have arranged a colorful & delicious Awurudu Kavili Table, and it was available to enjoy after lighting the oil lamp. Dean of the Faculty, Dr Dushan Jayawickrama, Coordinator of the Programme Prof. Kumuduni Sriyalatha, Snr. Prof. H.H.D.N.P. Opatha, Snr Prof.D.B.T.H. Dissabandara, Prof. K.M.S.D.Kulathunga and Ms. V.G. Awurudu Night 2024: A Festive Celebration by FMSC MBA/MSc 2023 Batchlebration by FMSC MBA/MSc 2023 Batch

The FMSC MBA/MSc 2023 Batch recently hosted “Awurudu Night 2024,” a spirited celebration to mark the culmination of their first year in the program. The event, held in traditional Sinhala Awurudu style, was a vibrant and joyous occasion, reflecting the unity and camaraderie of the MBA cohort. Led by the MBA/MSc in Management Program Coordinator, Prof. M.A.K. Sriyalatha, and Assistant Coordinator, Mrs. W.R.M. Shehani Shanika, the Awurudu Night welcomed esteemed guests, including Chair and Senior Professor H.N.D.P. Opatha, and Prof T.S.M Amarasena participants from the J’pura Masters Alumni Association, and other distinguished faculty members and lecturers. The evening was filled with cultural performances, traditional Awurudu games, and the selection of Awurudu Kumaras and Awurudu Kumaries, showcasing the rich heritage and traditions embraced by the FMSC MBA/MSc 2023 Batch. The success of the event was made possible through the collective efforts of the batch members, program office staff, and sub-organizing committees, who worked tirelessly to create a memorable and enjoyable experience for all attendees. “Awurudu Night 2024” exemplified the spirit of togetherness and celebration within the FMSC MBA/MSc 2023 Batch, marking a memorable milestone in their academic journey.

Japura Masters Alumni Association (JMAA) MBA / MSc – Masters Quiz – 2024

March 20, 2024, at the Monarch Imperial, witnessed the official commencement of the “JMAA Masters Quiz – 2024,” a knowledge-based event presented by the Japura Masters Alumni Association.

This day was an enormous achievement since it brought together over 160 brilliant minds, 35 

dynamic teams, and the support of 33 prestigious corporate companies. Dr. Dushan Jayawickrama, Dean of the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce – University of Sri Jayewardenepura, graced the occasion as the chief guest, and Prof. M.A.K. Sriyalatha, Coordinator of the MBA/MSc Program – University of Sri Jayewardenepura, for being our guest of honor.

The Inauguration Ceremony of the MBA/M.Sc. in Management Programme 2024

The Inauguration Ceremony of the MBA/M.Sc. in Management Programme 2024 was successfully held on January 13, 2024, at the New Boardroom of Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. The ceremony was led by Mr. Nalin B Karunaratne, Chief Executive Officer, Ceylon Biscuits Limited.  Dr. Dushan Jayawickrama, Dean of the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, Prof. T.G.U.P. Perera, Chairman—of the Board of Studies in Management Studies, Prof. M.A.K. Sriyalatha, Coordinator—MBA Unit, and Ms. W.R.M. Shehani Shanika, Assistant Coordinator of the same Unit, graced the ceremony. Senior academics representing the lecture panel including one of the former Dean of the Faculty of Management Studies, Prof. Hilary Silva, and Chairman—of the Faculty of Postgraduate Studies in Management Prof. Wasantha Perera, Prof. Sudath Manjula Amarasena, Prof. M.D. Pushpakumari, Prof. Champa Rajapakse, and Mr. Daham Gunasena also participated and added more colour to the ceremony. A total of 100 candidates participated in the inauguration ceremony, representing diverse professional backgrounds.

Curriculum Revision Workshop

It is delighted to share the successful completion of the curriculum revision workshop of the MBA/M.Sc. programme which was held on September 20, 2023, at Cinnamon Bey, Beruwala. The main objective of this final workshop was to have a collaborative, insightful, and holistic discussion to derive significant outcomes in producing industry-focused and updated MBA and M.Sc. programme for the year 2024 and onwards.

The key achievements of the workshop are the successful revision of the two-year MBA/MSc programme with diverse specializations catering to the evolving needs of aspiring business professionals. Two early exit options have been introduced for the programme ensuring flexibility and adaptability for our students is another outcome of the workshop.

The commitment and dedication of the curriculum revision committee members consisting of Prof. Aruna S. Gamage, Prof. MD Pushpakumari, Prof. M.A.K. Shriyalatha, and Ms. Pivindi Alwis, have been instrumental in steering the discussions and shaping crucial decisions. Special Guest Lecture on “Knowledge, Innovation and Management” for MBA/M.Sc. students

Prof. Yuri Sadoi from the Department of Economics of Meijo University, Japan conducted a special guest lecture for MBA/M.Sc. students on the topic “Knowledge, Innovation and Management” on 24th December 2023 at the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. Prof. Yuri also serves as a visiting professor in two Universities namely; Doshisha University in Japan and Mandalay University in Myanmar. Prof. Yuri received her PhD in the year 1999 from the Graduate School of Humanity and Environmental Studies, Kyoto University, Japan. Prof. Yuri serves as a professional member of Japan Association for Malaysian Studies and Japan Academy of International Business Studies. This was a hybrid lecture in which more than 50 participants joined online. Prof. Yuri shared her experience in Japan relevant to the topic while focusing on disruptive innovation with examples. The MBA/M.Sc. Unit specially acknowledge the support of Prof. Aruna S. Gamage, former Coordinator of the programme for coordinating the special speaker. Prof. M.A.K. Sriyalatha, Coordinator of the programme and Ms. W.R.M. Shehani Shanika, Assistant Coordinator also participated in the event.

Outbound Training Programme (OBT) of MBA/M.Sc. in Management Programme 2023

An Outbound Training Programme (OBT) was successfully concluded with over 65 students of the MBA/ M.Sc. in Management Intake 2023 on 4th and 5th November 2023, at Occidental Paradise, Dambulla. This OBT Programme was conducted to provide a dynamic and immersive learning experience for aspiring MBA students. This programme aims to break away from traditional classroom settings, fostering independent learning and leadership development in a unique outdoor environment.

Dr. Dushan Jayawickrama, Dean, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, led a special workshop for students on the development of communication, managerial, and social skills on the first day. This OBT Programme was a well-rounded experience, integrating a variety of outdoor adventure activities including Ice-breaking events, Team-building activities, Leadership development games, confidence-building games, and problem-solving games. In addition to that, there was an evening gathering with some entertaining indoor activities. Those entertaining events provided students with an opportunity to unwind, socialize, and expand their professional networks in a more informal setting.

Throughout the programme, students have participated in a series of activities which cover various aspects of leadership, teamwork, creativity, and social skills, empowering students to adapt and thrive in diverse managerial scenarios.

Three-day MBA Study Tour of MBA/M.Sc. in Management Intake 2020

A three-day MBA study tour was successfully concluded with over 60 students of the MBA/ M.Sc. in Management Intake 2020 from July 29 to July 31st, 2023, at Aliya Resort, Sigiriya, and Heritance Kandalama, Dambulla.

The purpose of this study tour was to explore the history and nature while promoting independent learning among future management professionals. Helping students and Faculty to refresh and reflect in a quiet and reposeful environment that promotes creativity in group settings and creating a space to network was the core objective of the tour. It was a break from the monotony of classroom learning, improved teamwork, social skills, and built lifelong memories among MBA students.

Prof. Aruna S. Gamage, Senior Lecturer, Department of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, led a special workshop for students on the development of managerial skills. In this workshop, students were able to improve their leadership, creativity, and social skills while students were able to individually engage, enjoy and energize. For students to release their stress and relax while also expanding their networking opportunities, an entertainment event was organized at night. In order to learn more about environmental management and corporate sustainability, students had the opportunity to see Heritance Kandalama’s most advanced water recycling system on the third day. The hotel visit and exploration both helped students to learn more on corporate environmentalism. Students had the opportunity to visit the Ritigala Archeological Site and Strict Natural Reserve on the second day to observe flora and fauna, colourful butterflies, and ancient ruins.

This three-day workshop was graced by the presence of Dr. Dushan Jayawickrama, Dean, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, Prof. Wasantha Perera, Chairman, Board of Studies, Faculty of Graduate Studies, Prof. Saman Yapa, Chairman, Postgraduate Center for Business Studies, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, Prof. Sudath  Manjula Amarasena, representing the panel of lecturers of the MBA programme, Prof. Kumuduni Sriyalatha, Coordinator, MBA/M.Sc. It was obvious that this tour was an amazing opportunity for all the students to relax their academically stressed selves as well as other commitments by being far away from the complexities and being super close to nature.

Inauguration ceremony of MBA/M.Sc. in Management Programme 2023
The Inauguration Ceremony of the MBA/M.Sc. in Management Programme 2023 was successfully held on February 19, 2023, at the Senate Boardroom of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. The ceremony was led by Mr. Pushpika Janadeera, Managing Director of Dipped Products PLC and a proud J’pura MBA alumnus. He shared his experiences in the export market before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting how his J’pura MBA expertise had fostered in his professional success. Prof. P.D. Nimal, Dean of the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, Prof. S.T.W. Saman Yapa, Chairman—of the Board of Studies in Management Studies, Prof. M.A.K. Sriyalatha, Coordinator—MBA Unit, and Ms. W.R.M. Shehani Shanika, Assistant Coordinator of the same Unit, graced the ceremony. Senior academics representing the lecture panel including Professor Aruna Shantha Gamage who was the former coordinator of the Unit also participated and added more colour to the ceremony. MIS Workshop

An Interactive Learning Session on “Information Systems Ethics”, adopting the techniques of Student-Centered Learning (SCL), has been successfully conducted by Dr. Mahesh Fernando, Senior Lecturer, Head, Department of Information Technology, FMSC, USJ on 14th May 2023. The participants who are the students following the course “Management Information Systems” of the MBA/M.Sc. in Management Programme 2022 have developed informational and colorful posters as groups. This session expected master-level students to improve their creativity, visualization ability, and presentation skills while linking the theoretical concepts learned in the classroom with their industry experience. The session ended with the selection of the best poster using the judgment of the session participants.
