Overview

This Programme is offered for the first time in 2023, providing a foundation in quantitative methods by examining the fundamental statistical theory underpinning standard statistical procedures and specific procedures relevant to various sectors. This Programme introduces participants to the management and analysis of quantitative data using a suitable software package. The Programme explores the nature of quantitative data, the relationship between quantitative analysis and theory development, and several key statistical topic areas. Knowing these allows a more in-depth understanding of other people’s research, particularly that reported in journals and government publications.

Furthermore, these techniques are applied in various research settings, including non- profit organisations, for-profit research institutes, and local, state, and federal government agencies. The Programme focuses on general-purpose statistical data analysis and more advanced medical statistics, multivariate analysis, and time series applications.

Objectives

This Programme aims to provide participants with extensive knowledge and the skills required to perform statistical operations using commonly available software tools. The program also aims to increase understanding of research strategies and the methodological and technological limitations of statistical techniques and applications. It teaches participants how to input and organise data to make it more convenient for specific research purposes and how to use the most appropriate software for scientific and business research.
This Programme also teaches participants how to present research results appropriately and convey the information in a user-friendly format. It also covers the theory and applications of relevant statistical techniques and data interpretation for informed decision-making.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the programme, the participants will be able,

-to develop analytical/statistical skills as

  • Ability to perform analysis within the overall research logic, selecting appropriate statistical methods for specific research frameworks and hypotheses.
  • Understand the nature and logic of the composition and interpretation of underlying statistical criteria and procedures.
  • Awareness of the relationship between the obtained statistical results and the processes going on in real life.

-to develop computer skills as

  • Selection of appropriate software depending on the nature of the analysis.
  • Prepare datasheets, generate necessary outputs and arrange them appropriately for report writing.
  • Utilise the related software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) as additional tools to
    facilitate the presentation of outputs.

-to develop presentation skills as

  • Ability to prepare reports on statistical data analysis in various formats, including
academic reports, business reports, and scientific articles.
  • Ability to explain the logic behind selecting and applying specific procedures for
    various research tasks.
  • Ability to select presentation methods tailored to the target audience’s specific
    needs.
