Nihal Chandratilaka Matara Arachchige is a distinguished legal scholar and practitioner with extensive experience in both academia and the legal profession.He currently serves as a Senior Lecturer (Grade 1) at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura in Sri Lanka.
Nihal's academic journey began with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from Colombo University in 2000. He further advanced his legal studies by obtaining a Master’s in Law (LLM) from Wolverhampton University, UK, in 2004, followed by an M.Phil. from the University of Colombo in 2016. He has been an Attorney-at-Law of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka since 2001.
Throughout his career, Nihal has held several key positions, including the Founding Head of the Legal Studies Unit (2016-2021), Deputy Proctor of the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce (FMSC), and Senior Treasurer of the Student Union at the same faculty. He has also contributed significantly to various academic and administrative committees and has been involved in the ethical review processes and program coordination across multiple faculties.
As a researcher, Nihal has authored several publications on topics ranging from business law to human rights and digital copyright. His work has been recognized in both national and international forums. In addition to his academic contributions, he has been actively involved in teaching and mentoring students across various universities in Sri Lanka.
Nihal’s dedication to the legal profession is evident in his roles as a notary public, company secretary, and commissioner for oaths. He is also a committed educator, having contributed to the development of legal education in Sri Lanka through his involvement in curriculum development and as a resource person for various professional bodies.
Outside of his academic and legal endeavors, Nihal has a passion for swimming, having represented and captained the Colombo University swimming team during his undergraduate years. He remains actively engaged in the broader academic and legal community, participating in numerous seminars and workshops both in Sri Lanka and internationally.
Nihal continues to strive for excellence in his field, with a focus on imparting knowledge to the next generation of legal professionals and contributing to the advancement of legal studies in Sri Lanka. He currently is the Proctor of University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
