A Text Book Expanding the Horizon of HRM

December 14, 2018 @ 8:00 am - January 31, 2019 @ 5:00 pm

This book is on Sustainable Human Resource Management, which will be one of the most important subjects in the education of Management of Organizations in the future though there is no single course designed on it yet in any of the curriculums of undergraduate degrees and postgraduate degrees in HRM being offered by any of both state and private universities and professional institutes in Sri Lanka, perhaps in Asia.

Goals of the organization will have to be expanded to address current challenges which are being faced by HR Managers and other managers in contemporary organizations which are increasingly expected to serve not only owners and other direct stakeholders (customers, employees, and suppliers) but also society and environment. In the modern world, every organization and every manager must be concerned with making significant and positive contributions to environmental, social, and economic performance of the organization. Sustainability is the most important issue that every professional has to deal with now and will have to deal with in the future too.

Managing human resources in sustainable way requires a great deal of knowledge and skills and HR Managers and relevant professionals must know environmental, social, and economic aspects of managing people at work so that they can significantly and positively contribute to environmental, social, and economic performance of the organizations. To the author’s understanding, there is no textbook on Sustainable HRM which is readable, understandable, teachable, theoretical and practical, particularly in the Asian context. For the first time the author developed a major textbook of Sustainable HRM for the reason of filling this gap and indeed by expanding the horizons of HRM. With this book the author hopes that a new HRM specialized course titled Sustainable HRM will be introduced to HRM curricula of various degrees and professional programmes in HRM or related fields in Sri Lanka. Another reason for writing this book is that the topic of Sustainable HRM holds special interest to the author, and he is indeed pleased to share what he knows with you.

The objective of this book is to provide a systematic and rational understanding of Sustainable HRM based on a model developed by me, both conceptual understanding and application-oriented understanding to the reader. It delivers a systematic approach to the analysis and handling of major issues in Sustainable HRM. An attempt was made to present complex subject matters by simplifying English language with the intention of enhancing readability and ability of understanding of the reader.

Key features of the book include:

1. Chapter objectives and summary
2. Useful frameworks
3. Instruments developed by the author to measure various Sustainable HRM constructs
4. Real-life and interesting examples
5. Review questions
6. Activities (Cases, Critical incidents, and Skill builders) and
7. Glossary

The book is an essential reference to everyone who wishes to become an appropriate HRM specialist or scholar.
