
Field Visit to Dialog BBG Submarine Cable Landing Station
The Second Year Students of the Department of Information Technology participated in a site visit to the Bay of Bengal Gateway (BBG) Submarine Cable Landing Station operated by Dialog Axiata Plc on the 6th of October 2016. The station built at a cost of USD 100 Million and inaugurated in May 2016 is located in Mount Lavinia. Using an Ultra High Capacity Submarine Fiber Optic cable, it is the single largest source of Internet connectivity to Sri Lanka.
47 Students joined in the visit which was organized by Dr. K.S. Lasith Gunawardena on behalf of the Department with the assistance of Mr. Chandika Witharana, Mr. Nishantha Senarath, Mr. Ruwan Kohombakanda, Ms. T.A. Rupasinghe, Ms. R.M.M.D. Pemarathne, Ms. J.A.D.K.M. Perera, Ms. H.M.P. Herath, Ms. A.M.I.M Aththanayake from the Department Tutorial Staff.
The visit was arranged by Mr. Muditha Gunasekera (Head – DevOPS, Dialog Axiata) and Mr. Ruchira Yasaratne (Head – Services and Network Assurance, Dialog Axiata) and was coordinated by Ms. Shashikala Jayarathe (Assistant Manager – Subsea Cable Systems and ITMC Operations, Dialog Axiata) on behalf of Dialog Axiata Plc. The students gained valuable knowledge by was of a presentation on the station and it’s activities as well as the site tour which exposed them to the state of the art facility.
