Prof. Lasith Gunawardena appointed as the new Head of Department of Information Technology

Prof. Lasith Gunawardena assumed duties as the Head of the Department of Information Technology, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, on the 2nd of June 2023. He took over from Dr. Mahesh Fernando, who served as the Head of the Department from June 2020.

Prof. Gunawardena joined the University as an Instructor in Computer Technology in 1999 and as a lecturer in IT attached to the Department of Marketing Management in 2001. Subsequently, during the faculty restructuring process in 2001, he was attached to the IT Unit of the Department of Business Administration, and in 2003 joined the Department of IT and Decision Sciences at its inception as a founding member. Between 2003 and 2006, he served as the Coordinator of the IT Resource Centre of the Faculty.

Prof. Gunawardena obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Physical Sciences from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and completed a Master of Science in Advanced Computing at UCSC. He obtained his doctorate (D. Eng.) from Shimane University, Japan, in Human-Computer Interaction. He is also a Fellow Member of BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT (BCS, UK), and a member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET, UK). He also serves as a Senior Member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM, USA), the Institution of Electronic and Electrical Engineers (IEEE, USA), and as a member of the Computer Society of Sri Lanka (CSSL).
