“Beyond Borders – Exploring the Evolution and Latest Developments in Indian Stock Markets”

The Department of Finance, in proud collaboration with CFA Society Sri Lanka, successfully hosted an educational webinar on exploring the evolution and timely developments in Indian Stock Markets, on the 7th of May, 2024.

Over 200 participants, which included lecturers, and undergraduates of the Department of Finance joined the webinar, held via Zoom with a broadcast reaching a wider audience on Facebook. Initiated by Prof. Chandana Gunathilaka, FCA, Head of the Department of Finance, the webinar brought together the esteemed panelists, Mr. Pankaj Sharma, Senior Manager – Capital Markets Policy, CFA Institute in India and Mr. Gaurav Kapur, CFA, Director – Government Relations, CFA Institute in India, and the knowledgeable moderator, Mr. Nuwan Jayawardana, CFA, Chair – University Outreach Committee, CFA Society Sri Lanka, who guided the discussion.

The webinar commenced with Mr. Nuwan Jayawardana welcoming the participants and providing valuable context about the CFA qualification and the day’s theme. Prof. Chandana Gunathilaka, Head of the Department of Finance, then addressed the gathering, setting the atmosphere for stimulating discussion.

The discussion started with a brainstorming quiz, to engage attendees and introduce the topic. This was followed by a deep dive into the Indian economy and its stock markets. The discussion then explored the latest products and technological advancements influencing the Indian market landscape, highlighting the Securities and Exchange Board of India’s involvement in regulating the capital market. An analysis of the absolute and relative performance of key sectors within the Indian market was then presented. The webinar concluded with a dedicated Q&A session, allowing participants to have their questions addressed directly by the expert panel.
