Snehadhara ‘23 – Lighting the Way Forward for the Little Ones at Thimbiriyawa Vidyalaya, Kurunegala

The Students’ Association of Finance (SAF) of the Department of Finance, successfully concluded its annual CSR initiative, “Snehadhara ‘23” on the 26th of April 2024. This initiative aimed to support schools facing financial difficulties, ultimately contributing to uplift the nation’s education system.

This year, Thimbiriyawa Vidyalaya in Kurunegala was chosen to benefit from “Snehadhara ‘23”.  With the continued guidance of Prof. Chandana Gunathilaka, the head of the department and the lecturers attached to the Department of Finance, along with the enthusiastic participation and commitment of undergraduates and alumni, several improvements were done to the school through the project.

The main building housing grades 6 to 11 classrooms was renovated, lavatory facilities were repaired, and a dedicated washroom was established for female students in the primary section. The school’s library was refurbished and restocked with new books, while existing computers were repaired to ensure access to technology facilities. To further support the students, sanitary napkins were provided to female students in grades 8 to 11. Additionally, essential stationery items were distributed to all students from grade 1 to 11, and the classrooms were equipped with fans to improve student comfort.

The project’s success culminated in an inauguration ceremony held on April 26th, 2024. The ceremony was graced by the presence of Prof. Chandana Gunathilaka, the head of the Department of Finance, along with the esteemed panel of lecturers attached to the department including Dr. S. D. L. Kongahawatte, Ms. Abehitha Fernando, Ms. Ama Hinguralaarachchi, Mrs. Miyuki Peiris, Mr. Ruwanga Wijesooriya, and Mrs. P. H. Palihawadana. Additionally, 3rd and 4th year undergraduate students and alumni of the department were present, reflecting the collective effort behind “Snehadhara’ 23.” In addition, several activities were conducted for the school children and for the undergraduates to bond and create a memorable experience.

The Department of Finance takes immense pride in the Students’ Association of Finance, for this impactful initiative, showcasing the department’s commitment towards social responsibility.
