Department of Finance welcomes the Batch of 2021/2022

The Academic Staff of the Department of Finance, in collaboration with the undergraduates of the department, warmly welcomed its incoming batch of 2021/2022 at the orientation programme held on the 24th of April 2024 at the KAM Auditorium. The programme featured the esteemed panel of lecturers from the Department of Finance and a special guest speaker, Mr. Sunil Bandarawatta, Group CFO of Informatics Group, a distinguished alumnus of the department.

Lecturers from the department shared their insights with the new batch of undergraduates. Leading the session, Snr. Prof. D. B. P. H. Dissabandara highlighted the skills required by finance graduates, recent developments in the field of finance along with career opportunities available to finance graduates. Prof. Y. K. Weerakoon Banda shared a message specifying the history and evolution of the Department of Finance. This was followed by Prof. P. D. Nimal, who addressed the importance of student discipline and the department’s expectations. Dr. Neelangie Nanayakkara discussed the Applied Finance programme which is the postgraduate arm of the Department of Finance, while Dr. Sampath Kongahawatte elaborated on internship opportunities and student activities. Subsequently, Prof. Chandana Gunathilaka, the head of the department, provided an overview of the department.

The guest speaker, Mr. Bandarawatta, a graduate from the very first batch of the department, provided an inspiring speech on his experiences in the field of finance. The Students’ Association of Finance (SAF) was introduced to the incoming students by its President, Mr. Yasiru Jayashantha. The event also included lively student performances, showcasing their talents.

This orientation programme served as a wonderful opportunity for the undergraduates to be introduced to the department’s academia, curriculum, and the ever-evolving world of finance.
