Double Win for University of Sri Jayewardenepura for the Second Consecutive Year at the CFA Sri Lanka Research Challenge 2021/22

For the 15th consecutive year CFA Sri Lanka Society organized the CFA Sri Lanka Research Challenge with the participation of 18 teams representing both state and private sector Universities. The teams prepared a research report on Haycarb PLC, the subject company of this year’s competition. Team A and Team D of University of Sri Jayewardenepura, University of Kelaniya and Team 2 of University of Colombo, secured the top four positions from the investment report and were qualified for the final round of the local competition. These teams presented and defended their investment research, virtually via Zoom to a panel of industry experts representing top financial institutions of Sri Lanka and the Asia-Pacific Region, at the local finals held on 25th February 2022.

After a tough competition, Team A of University of Sri Jayewardenepura became winners of the local finals. The team comprised of third year undergraduates, namely, Dulanja Gamanayake (Team Leader), Ashan Kottagoda, Sapna Ravishika from Department of Finance, Sachinthi Wirasinha from Department of Decision Sciences and Malik Nazahim from Department of Business Economics. The team was guided by the industry mentor – CFA Charterholder – Mr. Tharinda Jayawardena, of TWCorp (Pvt) Ltd. and the faculty advisor – Ms. Abehitha Fernando of Department of Finance, throughout the challenge.

Team D of University of Sri Jayewardenepura emerged runners up at the local finals and the team comprised of third year undergraduates of Department of Finance, namely, Charith Priyashan (Team Leader), Dahami Perera, Isuri Hettihewa, Hasan Udayanka and Sachini Fernando. The team was guided by the industry mentor – CFA Charterholder – Mr. Pasan Ilangaratne, of Guardian Fund Management Limited. and the faculty advisor – Dr. P.A.N.S. Anuradha of Department of Finance, in this endeavor.

The eminent panel of judges at the virtual local finals comprised Dr. Andrew Stotz, CFA – CEO of A.Stotz Investment Research, Ms. Ruvini Fernando – Head of Capital Projects & Infrastructure, PwC Sri Lanka, and Mr. Senaka Kakiriwaragodage, CFA – Director / Chief Executive Officer, NDB Capital Holdings Limited.  The local champions will advance to compete against in the Asia-Pacific Sub-Regional Challenge in March 2022, representing Sri Lanka.
