UNIVERSITY INVESTMENT DAY – 2017

The Annual University Investment Day – 2017 of University of Sri Jayewardenepura, organized by the Department of Finance – Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce was held on 05th of December at the Fayol Hall of Soratha Building from 2pm to 7pm. The annual event was organized for the 3rd consecutive year with the main objective of formulating an investment community not restricted to university boundaries.

The Occasion was graced with the valuable presence of Mr. Vajira Wijegunawardane – Director General, Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of Sri Lanka and Mr. Rajeeva Bandaranaike – Chief Executive Officer of Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) as Chief Guests while, Prof. Sampath Amaratunge – Vice Chancellor of University of Sri Jayewardenepura and Dr. U. Anura Kumara – Dean of the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce as Guests of Honor with the Head, Prof. Hareendra Dissabandara and the Lecture panel of the Department of Finance.

To align with the Vision of the University – “Prosper Lives through Education”, the University Investment Day 2017 is one of the most significant event organized by the Department of Finance to provide a theoretical and practical exposure to the undergraduates by creating an awareness and thereby built a solid foundation on Capital Markets of Sri Lanka with the contribution of the resource persons from key financial institutions.

Mr. Tushara Jayaratne – Director, External Relations and Surveillance, Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of Sri Lanka, Mr. Nishantha Hewavithana – Head of Research and New Products, Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE), Mr. Sumith Perera – Head of Portfolio Management, Ceylon Guardian Investment Trust PLC, Mr. Pasindu Perera, Head of Research of Candor Equities (Pvt) Ltd were the keynote speakers for the four sessions of the event.

As the pre-event presentation, the undergraduates of the Department of Finance presented a debate on capital market under the theme – “Whether Sri Lankan investors have adequate opportunities to participate actively in the stock market”. Following the thundering debate, Senior Lecturer Mr. Sampath Kongahawatte delivered the welcome speech to the audience which stressed the importance of the practical exposure for the undergraduates in the field of Finance.

The speakers of the event focused on the theme of the occasion. The session started with the presentation of Mr. Pasindu Perera on the “Role of a Stock Broker in investing in capital markets of Sri Lanka”. Following him Mr. Sumith Perera shared his knowledge on “Role and Experience of a fund Manager with regard to investing in Sri Lanka”. Mr. Nishantha Hewavithana addressed the gathering on the “Role of CSE as a market operator” and the guest lecture sessions concluded with final presentation made by Mr. Tushara Jayarathe on the “Securities regulation and the role of Securities and Exchange Commission”.

Post the presentation on various topics in relation to capital markets by the key persons from Financial Institutions, a panel discussion was held with the guest speakers moderated by Prof. Hareendra Dissabandara – Head of the Department of Finance. During the interactive session, the panel of financial experts shared their knowledge along with the discussion on the current trends and developments of the economy of Sri Lanka for the questions raised by the audience.

The CDS accounting opening session by Candor Equities (Pvt) Limited marked the conclusion of the “University Investment Day 2017” which implied the continuation of a series of events organized by the Department of Finance which blends the finest in theory and practice and by forging interactions between the University and the wider polity. All the events of the University add value to each undergraduate and enable them to prosper in the knowledge based economy.
