BIS Students Represent the University at NBQSA 2026 with SolveMate
A team of third-year Bachelor of Information Systems (BIS) students has represented the University of Sri Jayewardenepura at the National ICT Awards NBQSA 2026, with their innovative project, SolveMate, being recognized in the Winning Circle in the Tertiary Student Project (Business) category.
The project was developed by Pramila Thamilselvan, P. A. Ruvin Tharinda Palihawadana, D. M. Nethini Bandara, and Avindi Getawakanda, under the supervision of Ms. Upeksha Samarasinghe.
SolveMate is an AI-powered decision-support platform designed to help researchers identify compatible, safer, and more sustainable solvents for polymers before laboratory testing. By combining scientific compatibility analysis, machine learning, and explainable artificial intelligence (XAI), the platform supports researchers in making faster and more informed solvent-selection decisions. It aims to reduce unnecessary laboratory experimentation while providing meaningful insights into the suitability of different solvents for polymer applications. The project demonstrates how Artificial Intelligence and Information Systems can be applied to solve complex challenges in scientific research, particularly within the field of chemistry.
The team’s participation in NBQSA 2026 reflects the ability of BIS students to apply their interdisciplinary knowledge beyond conventional business information systems applications and develop innovative solutions for specialized domains.
NBQSA is the National ICT Awards of Sri Lanka, conducted by the Sri Lankan Section of BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT. The awards provide a national platform for recognizing and benchmarking innovative ICT products and solutions. The 2026 awards ceremony was held on 25 September 2026.
