Inclusive leadership, symbolic capital and employee retention: Social recognition beyond managerial authority
Our Head of Department, Dr. Nayomi De Peiris together with Mr. Chamod Liyanage, has made another notable contribution to the field with their latest research article, “Inclusive leadership, symbolic capital and employee retention: Social recognition beyond managerial authority.” This was published in the International Journal of Sociology and Social Policy, an international peer-reviewed journal published by Emerald Publishing. The journal is indexed in Scopus and the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) of Web of Science.
The study examines how inclusive leadership gains legitimacy beyond formal managerial authority through social recognition, credibility, and workplace relationships. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s theoretical perspective, particularly the concept of symbolic capital, the research explores how leadership legitimacy is socially constructed and recognised within organisational settings. The study contributes to the literature on inclusive leadership and employee retention by highlighting how symbolic capital enables leaders to develop socially recognised influence beyond their formal positions. It offers a sociological understanding of leadership legitimacy and its implications for workplace relationships and employee retention.
