We are delighted to invite you to explore the latest insights from our Head of Department, Dr. Nayomi De Peiris, through her recent publication, “Sensemaking the external environment as strategic practice: evidence from a Global South organisation ” in Journal of Strategy and Management, which is a well-recognised international journal focusing on strategic management and organisational practices, indexed in both Scopus and Web of Science (WoS – ESCI).
This study examines how organisational actors make sense of the external macro environment under conditions of persistent uncertainty and how these sensemaking processes shape strategic understanding and organisational action. Drawing on a qualitative case study in a Sri Lankan export-oriented organisation, the study highlights that strategy emerges through ongoing interpretive processes rather than predefined planning. The findings contribute to strategy-as-practice literature by emphasising multiple modes of sensemaking, including retrospective, experiential, narrative, emergent and ethical dimensions, in shaping adaptive strategic responses within Global South contexts.
