The Department of Commerce was set up in the Vidyodaya Campus of the University of Sri Lanka in 1973 concurrently with the establishment of the Faculty of Management Studies & Commerce under the University re-organization scheme in 1972, The department was proud to run a highly reputed and successful B.Com (special) degree program in Sinhala and English medium with students initially allocated from among those sent to the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce and afterward directly from the University Grants Commission. The Department currently conducts its program in the English medium only.
The Department aims to produce graduates with appropriate managerial skills, knowledge and experience, who are competent to support and augment the economic development of the country by generating and imparting scientific knowledge with the aid of novel modes of delivery.
B.Com (Special) Degree
The curriculum of the B.Com Degree (Special) provides a carefully blended subject combination in Economics, Accountancy, Management, Entrepreneurship, Decision Sciences and Commercial Law. The curriculum has recently been revised to lay a broad and sound foundation for students to pursue professional careers and more advanced study in Commerce and Management.
B.Com (General) External Degree
Department of Commerce was established in 1972 at the very outset of the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce. It offered the prestigious B.Com (special) degree in English medium. The department commenced an external degree program in Commerce for externally registered students and offered a four year B.Com (special) external degree program in 1975.
