Eco-Certification: The Missing Pillar in Tourism Comeback Strategy - Sunday Observer

2026.02.08

This article highlights the importance of sustainability in rebuilding Sri Lankaโ€™s tourism industry. Based on a study of 392 international tourists, the research shows that eco-certifications significantly influence hotel selection. Certifications such as Green Key and GSTC increase touristsโ€™ trust by signaling environmental responsibility, quality, and ethical practices. The study also found that visible green initiatives like energy conservation, waste management, and water-saving systems positively affect tourist behavior. The article argues that eco-certification should not be treated merely as a marketing tool, but as a strategic pillar for long-term tourism resilience and competitiveness. It further recommends creating a national certification framework, offering financial incentives for sustainable investments, and supporting SMEs in adopting eco-certification standards.
