Eco-Certification: The Missing Pillar in Tourism Comeback Strategy - Sunday Observer
2026.02.08
This article highlights the importance of sustainability in rebuilding Sri Lankaโs tourism industry. Based on a study of 392 international tourists, the research shows that eco-certifications significantly influence hotel selection. Certifications such as Green Key and GSTC increase touristsโ trust by signaling environmental responsibility, quality, and ethical practices. The study also found that visible green initiatives like energy conservation, waste management, and water-saving systems positively affect tourist behavior. The article argues that eco-certification should not be treated merely as a marketing tool, but as a strategic pillar for long-term tourism resilience and competitiveness. It further recommends creating a national certification framework, offering financial incentives for sustainable investments, and supporting SMEs in adopting eco-certification standards.
