Surveying in Practice: An Immersive Field Learning Experience

The Department of Estate Management and Valuation, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, conducted an intensive Survey Camp from 6th to 10th September 2026, providing students with an immersive practical learning experience in land surveying, spatial data collection, and survey plan preparation. The fieldwork component was conducted at Dewadara Viharaya, Depanama, Pannipitiya, followed by plan preparation and related computational work at the Department of Estate Management and Valuation.

The fieldwork component involved terrain reconnaissance, preparation of prospection sketches, and establishment of survey stations. Working collaboratively in teams, students carried out closed-circuit perimeter traverses using surveying instruments such as theodolites, carefully measuring horizontal angles and distances while maintaining detailed field books to record observations, boundaries, and relevant site features.

Following the fieldwork, students progressed to the office-based computation and plan preparation stage. This involved mathematical balancing of survey observations, coordinate calculations, error adjustments, and preparation of accurate, scaled survey plans incorporating essential elements such as north points, legends, and grid layouts.

The Survey Camp also introduced students to the practical application of regulatory requirements, including the consideration of Urban Development Authority (UDA) regulations in land subdivision and area computations. This integrated approach strengthened students’ technical competencies, accuracy, teamwork, and ability to apply surveying knowledge within real-world land and property development contexts.

The Department continues to emphasize practical and experiential learning as an essential component of developing competent real estate professionals with the technical skills required for effective land and property management.
