In-depth analysis regarding the current situation of the Sri Lankan Economy and the future of Banking Sector in Sri Lanka

Department of Commerce has organised a guest lecture via the Zoom Meeting Platform on the topic of “In-depth analysis regarding the current situation of the Sri Lankan Economy and the Future of Banking Sector in Sri Lanka” on the 08th of July 2022. The guest lecture was conducted by Mr. Lalith Fernando who is a Risk Management and Credit Consultant and also the former Chief Risk Officer & Deputy GM of Bank of Ceylon with over 30 years of experience in the banking sector, and more than 10 years of experience in corporate management. His experiences in the banking sector include taking up positions in branch banking, International and Treasury, Credit and Risk Management, and much more. Currently, Mr. Lalith is engaged in overall syllabus review activities in the College of Banking and Finance Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka. Also, Mr. Lalith is the First Sri Lankan admitted to the FRM designation by the Global Association of Risk Professionals of the USA.

During the Lecture, many important aspects were discussed in length. Including

  • Depletion of foreign reserves
  • Inability to service public debts
  • Liquidity stress in foreign currencies
  • Inability to engage in international trade
  • Hyperinflation due to fiscal and monetary discrepancies
  • Macro- Economic imbalances

Ways and means of solving the above issues with collective consciousness, taking into consideration the inherent strengths as a nation, was the theme of the discussion.     The session was well attended and the candid contribution of the guest speaker was strongly acknowledged by the head of the department of commerce Dr. Ayoma Sumanasiri as well as the undergraduates, especially the Final Year undergraduates of the Department of Commerce
