Exploring Urban Development: DEMV Students Visit Colombo Port City
The Department of Estate Management and Valuation, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, organized a field visit for third-year undergraduate students of the B.Sc. (Honours) in Real Estate Management and Valuation degree programme under the EMV 3377 – Real Estate Development and Management course to Port City Colombo, one of Sri Lanka’s most significant urban development initiatives.
The visit provided students with valuable first-hand exposure to the planning, design, and implementation of a large-scale mixed-use development. Through guided site observations and interactive sessions, students explored key aspects of urban planning, infrastructure development, sustainability, investment opportunities, and contemporary real estate development practices that contribute to the transformation of modern cities.
The experience enabled students to gain a broader understanding of the complexities involved in delivering integrated urban developments while appreciating the strategic role of planning, innovation, and long-term investment in shaping sustainable urban environments. It also strengthened their ability to relate theoretical concepts of real estate development and management to real-world applications.
The Department extends its sincere appreciation to the management and staff of Port City Colombo for their warm hospitality and for sharing their knowledge and professional expertise. Their valuable contribution made the visit an enriching learning experience and reinforced the Department’s commitment to delivering industry-oriented education through meaningful engagement with leading development projects.
