Investigating Building Pathology through Field-Based Learning at Yagirala Forest Reserve

The Department of Estate Management and Valuation, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, organized a field visit for second-year undergraduate students of the B.Sc. (Honours) in Real Estate Management and Valuation degree programme as part of the EMV 2285 – Building Pathology course. The visit was conducted at the Research Bungalow located within the Yagirala Forest Reserve, Walallawita, providing students with a unique opportunity to examine building pathology in a tropical forest environment.

The field-based learning experience enabled students to investigate the causes and mechanisms of building deterioration by observing the interaction between natural environmental conditions and built structures. Through on-site assessments, students examined moisture-related defects, biological decay, moss and mould growth, timber deterioration, and other environmental factors affecting the long-term performance and durability of buildings.

Students also carried out measured surveys, condition assessments, and systematic site observations, allowing them to develop practical competencies in building diagnostics, defect identification, maintenance planning, and appropriate repair strategies. These activities strengthened their ability to apply theoretical concepts to real-world scenarios while enhancing their professional and analytical skills.
