Entry Qualifications for MSc in Waste Management and Circular Economy
(SLQF Level 10)
Applicants who possess one of the following minimum qualifications and good knowledge of English are eligible to apply for the MSc. degree program.
1. A bachelor’s degree (SLQF 5/SLQF 6) in a relevant discipline from a recognized University or degree-awarding institute.
2. A bachelor’s degree (SLQF 5/SLQF 6) from a recognized university or degree-awarding institution, along with prior learning or two years of relevant post-qualification experience.
3. A qualification equivalent to SLQF 6 or above in the relevant discipline from arecognized university, degree-awarding institute, or professional institute.
4. A qualification (passed-finalist) from a professional institute equivalent to SLQF 6or above from a recognized professional institute, along with prior learning or twoyears of relevant experience.
5. Completion of NVQ Level 7 with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a scale of 0-4, asdetermined by the BOSBS of the FMSC.
6. Any other qualification accepted by the Senate of the University of SriJayewardenepura.

Other Criteria
The admissions board will likely look at how well the waste management and circular economy degree aligns with the program or field of study the applicant is applying to.Relevant disciplines might include:
1. Environmental Science and Sustainability – The core of waste management andcircular economy aligns closely with principles of sustainable resource use andenvironmental protection.
2. Engineering (Environmental, Civil, Chemical) – Engineering solutions are integralto waste processing, resource recovery, and the development of sustainabletechnologies.
3. Economics and Business (Green Economics, Environmental Economics) –Understanding the economic drivers of the circular economy, such as cost-benefitanalysis and resource optimization, is essential for implementing effective circulareconomy models.
4. Urban Planning and Development – Integrates the principles of sustainable urbandevelopment, particularly waste management infrastructure and urban resourcecycles.
5. Policy and Governance – Critical for addressing regulatory, policy, and governanceissues associated with waste management and sustainable practices.
6. Public Health – The proper management of waste impacts public health, particularlyin areas of pollution control and sanitation.The board will consider these areas to assess the program’s academic and practical relevanceto the applicants chosen field.
Selection Procedure
The selection procedure consists of the following steps:
- The study program will be advertised in the print media and the university website of the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
- Online applications could be accessed via: https://pcbs.mgt.sjp.ac.lk/newreg/index.php
- Applications received will be initially screened to assess whether the minimum entry qualifications are met.
- The screened candidates will have to face an interview, in which their general knowledge, intelligence, and proficiency in the English Language will be assessed.
Interviews are conducted in the following manner.
- One to one interview is conducted for those who have duly filled applications and fulfilled the basic eligibility criteria
- There is no examination held to screen students.
- Interview panel will consist of a minimum of three faculty members with the designation of senior lecturer grade 1 or above.
- Interview criteria include mental capacity health to pursue a post graduate study, communication skills, analytical skills, presentation skills, motivation for research, financial ability to continue the degree. A marking scheme is developed for 100 marks referring to the above interview criteria by allocating equal marks. The pass mark for a candidate to follow the degree program is the average 50% from all panel members.
