Gaining admission to the B.Sc. Accounting (Special) Degree Programme has been highly competitive from the time of the establishment of the Department. Even today the ultimate dream of many students who follow the G.C.E. (Advanced Level) examination is to get selected for the B.Sc. Accounting (Special) Degree Programme.

Under the present structure, the students of the Department have to be first enrolled in the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce (FMSC) to follow a common curriculum in management in the first year of study. The selection for the FMSC is based on the performance at the G.C.E. (Advanced Level) examination conducted by the Department of Examinations, Sri Lanka. Students seeking entrance to B.Sc. Accounting (Special) Degree Programme of FMSC must have studied Accounting and Economics / Business Studies as subjects for the G.C.E. (Advanced Level) examination (For further information, please refer to the University Admissions Handbook) The allocation of students to the FMSC is made by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

After the one-year common program, students are selected to the Department of Accounting on the basis of the performance at the G. C. E. (Advanced Level) and preference of the student having considered the district basis representation. Students of different geographical, linguistic, and religious groups study in the Department. Currently, the number of students who apply to the Department of Accounting happens to be the highest for any area of specialization of the FMSC. At present, the number of students enrolled for the Degree Programme is approximately 200.
