Educational Filed Visit to Galle : Building Construction and Conservation Techniques
To enhance the theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom under the course module EMV 2347 Building Construction a field visit was organized to Galle Dutch Fort. Undergraduates of Degree Part II along with the course coordinator, Dr. Chameera Udawattha and assistant course coordinators took part in the field visit on 8th November 2022.
This field visit was combined with an assignment which enables the students to understand the building construction and conservation techniques, to develop students’ property documentation and organizing skills and to develop their drawing, presentation, and creativity skills. It was a novel experience to all the students to explore the streets and old buildings of the historic Galle Dutch Fort and record their findings and observations, sketching the buildings and structures.
The group of students also visited the Jetwing Light House which is designed by the renowned Architecture Sir Jeffrey Bawa. They were warmly welcomed by the hotel staff and given a tour of the property. Students were able to gain a first-hand experience on how a hotel operates covering front office, food and beverage, housekeeping components. Upon the completion of their assignment works, students had a brief fire camp in the Galle Fort beach where they had chance to relax and have fun by singing songs.
