On the 18th of April 2023, a beach cleanup was organized in response to the workshop on “Ocean Plastic Pollution and the Parley AIR Strategy” held the previous day (17th April 2023). The cleanup was a joint effort between the 3rd year undergraduates, academic staff, and members of Parley for the Oceans to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of establishing the Department of Commerce. The cleanup was held at Wellawatta Beach and was attended by many participants who worked together to collect litter and debris from the beach. The event was a great success, and the participants were able to make a significant impact in cleaning up the beach and raising awareness about the issue of plastic pollution. The beach cleanup was an excellent example of community engagement, and the Department of Commerce looks forward to more such initiatives in the future. This event was coordinated by Mr. KSL Wijayasinghe (Lecturer – Probationary).
