My Student Experience at the Department of Business Economics

Economics has always been a subject that fascinated me, particularly during my Advanced Level studies. This interest inspired me to join the Department of Business Economics of the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. Looking back, I am grateful for that decision, as my experience in the Department has been an important part of my academic, personal, and professional development.

My experience extended far beyond the classroom, offering me numerous opportunities to learn, explore, and grow. From organising industry forums and contributing to departmental events to participating in competitions and engaging in aesthetic activities, university life exposed me to experiences that complemented my academic learning. These opportunities helped me develop essential skills in leadership, communication, teamwork, and problem-solving while encouraging me to make the most of everything the University had to offer.

The guidance and support provided by the lecturers were also significant aspects of my journey. Their approachability, willingness to provide guidance, and encouragement to pursue new opportunities created a supportive learning environment that motivated me to challenge myself and strive for excellence.

The journey was not without its challenges. Balancing academic work with extracurricular commitments, departmental responsibilities, and my internship required considerable effort and discipline. There were many late nights and demanding periods, but these experiences taught me the importance of time management, perseverance, and accountability. They also helped me recognise that some of the most valuable lessons are gained through experiences beyond the classroom.

As I reflect on my undergraduate years, I realise how significantly the Department has contributed to shaping the person I am today. Beyond the academic foundation I gained, it gave me opportunities to discover my strengths, take on new responsibilities, build meaningful relationships, and develop a clearer perspective on my future aspirations.

I am sincerely grateful to the Department of Business Economics for the opportunities, guidance, and support I received throughout this journey. More than simply a place where I earned my degree, the Department provided an environment that encouraged me to grow, challenge myself, and realise my potential. I will always value the experiences and lessons I carry with me as I move forward to the next chapter of my life.
