Project Management Initiatives are practical, project-based academic activities conducted by the Department of Business Economics under the subject Project Management. These initiatives provide undergraduates with structured opportunities to apply project management concepts in real-world settings by planning, organising, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating projects that respond to identified institutional, community, economic, and development-related needs.
Over the years, these initiatives have taken different forms depending on the academic objectives, project scope, stakeholder requirements, and contemporary relevance of each edition. Past initiatives have included rural development projects, school and pre-school development activities, community infrastructure improvements, educational support initiatives, youth and women empowerment activities, faculty facility enhancement projects, public awareness initiatives, economic forums, and entrepreneurship or SME-oriented engagements. In recent years, several of these initiatives have been conducted under the brand name J’PURA Expo.
Through these initiatives, students gain practical experience in project identification, proposal development, stakeholder coordination, budgeting, resource mobilisation, logistics management, implementation planning, teamwork, leadership, documentation, reporting, and impact-oriented evaluation. The initiatives also strengthen the Department’s engagement with schools, communities, public institutions, industry partners, entrepreneurs, and other external stakeholders.
As an experiential learning component, Project Management Initiatives enable undergraduates to connect classroom-based learning with practical implementation while contributing to meaningful social, institutional, economic, sustainability, and development-related outcomes.
J’pura Expo 2026 – Sustainability Forum

‘Fostering the Blooms’ Community Development Project
The Fostering the Bloom Community Development Project, implemented under BEC 3324: Project Management, enabled third-year undergraduates to improve the infrastructure of WP/Mathu/Lihiniyawa Junior School in Kalutara District by upgrading its main hall with protective grills, doors, and colour washing.
‘Nanasa’ Community Development Project
A community development project under BEC 3324: Project Management upgraded the library facilities of WP/Mathu/Lihiniyawa Junior School in Kalutara District through infrastructure improvements, the donation of 636 books and essential furniture and equipment, alongside a Mathematics seminar for G.C.E. O/L students.
‘Nonimi Diyawara’ Community Development Project
The Nonini Diyawara Community Development Project, implemented under BEC 3324: Project Management, improved access to drinking water for residents of Ekneligoda North village in Kuruwita by establishing a direct water supply line and installing water meters for households.
‘Piyawara’ Community Development Project
The Piyawara Community Development Project, conducted under BEC 3324: Project Management, developed the IT laboratory of WP/Mathu/Lihiniyawa Junior School in Kalutara District through the donation and installation of 30 computers, together with necessary furniture, wiring, software, and improvements to the learning environment.
‘Securing Edu’Mind’ Community Development Project
The Securing Edu’Mind Community Development Project, conducted under BEC 3324: Project Management, improved the learning environment of WP/Mathu/Lihiniyawa Junior School in Kalutara District by upgrading two classrooms with protective mesh coverings.
Project to renovate Aesthetic Room of Lihiniyawa Junior School
A community development project under BEC 3324: Project Management renovated the aesthetic room of WM/Mathu/Lihiniyawa Junior School, creating an improved environment for dancing and music education while providing the school with required dancing and musical instruments.
Grand Finale of Radix 2017
The Grand Finale of RADIX 2017, the first inter-university dancing competition for management undergraduates, was held on 16 November 2017 from 6.00 p.m. onwards at the Bandaranaike Hall, showcasing six finalist teams while providing students with practical exposure to project planning and event management.
