Mr. Pasan Rathnayake Secures 1st Runners-Up Position in Emerging Young Economist Contest at Colombo Business Economics Summit

Mr. Pasan Rathnayake, a fourth-year undergraduate of the Department of Business Economics, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, secured the 1st Runners-up position in the Emerging Young Economist (EYE) Contest held at the Colombo Business Economics Summit 2024.

The Colombo Business Economics Summit was organized by the Business Economics Students’ Association (BESA) of the University of Colombo with the objective of fostering undergraduate interest in contributing to the economic development of the country. The summit provided a platform for students to enhance their academic knowledge, share learning experiences, and engage with expertise in business, management, and economics.

The event was held on 26 March 2024 at the University of Colombo premises and brought together students, academics, and industry professionals from across the country. It featured several competitions, including a Policy Pitching Contest, a Quiz Competition, and the Emerging Young Economist Contest, each designed to challenge participants’ subject knowledge, critical thinking, and communication skills.

Mr. Rathnayake participated in the Emerging Young Economist Contest, which assessed contestants’ ability to interpret economic messages from visual slides and present their insights clearly. The competition also included a live open interview with a panel of distinguished economists and scholars from the University of Colombo. During the interview, participants were evaluated on their knowledge of Economics and Management, analytical ability, critical thinking, and oral communication skills.

Amidst strong competition, Mr. Rathnayake demonstrated excellent analytical skills and a sound understanding of economic concepts. His ability to interpret complex economic messages and communicate them effectively impressed the judging panel. His performance during the live interview further reflected his confidence, subject knowledge, and ability to express ideas clearly.
