The Department of Business Economics Transformed My Career
It is a great pleasure to reflect on the contribution made by my undergraduate alma mater, the Department of Business Economics of the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, to my university journey. This experience culminated in receiving the Best Student Gold Medal at the 47th Convocation of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
Without hesitation, I can say that the Department of Business Economics provides an excellent platform for students to become well-rounded graduates who excel in both academic and extracurricular activities. At a time when there is growing demand for graduates who possess management knowledge together with a sound understanding of economics, the Department has successfully responded to the changing needs of the professional world.
The research culture cultivated by the Department enabled me to secure the Economic Research Championship Award on two consecutive occasions at the 15th and 16th South Asian Economics Students’ Meets, organised in association with the World Bank.
The international exposure and networking opportunities facilitated by the Department also contributed to my appointments as Country Director for Sri Lanka of the International Youth Society for Sustainable Development and the South Asian Forum of Emerging Economists.
Leadership opportunities provided through student organisations such as the Business Economics Students’ Association, BIZCON, and the Sri Lanka Forum of Junior Business Economists helped me strengthen my leadership capabilities. I am also sincerely grateful for the guidance and support extended by the Department, which enabled me to achieve national recognition in aesthetic and sporting activities during my university years.
The Department of Business Economics has contributed significantly to my personal, academic, and professional development. Simply stated, it transformed my career.
