Workshop on the Personal Data Protection Act
The Personal Data Protection Act (PDP Act No. 9 of 2022) in Sri Lanka safeguards individuals’ personal data by establishing clear rules on how organizations collect, process, and store personal information. This legislation promotes accountability and transparency, ensuring privacy rights are respected across both public and private sectors. As a university, we too are expected to align with these requirements once the Act is fully enforced later this year.
Recognizing the importance of compliance, especially in the digital domain, the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce (FMSC) – IT Governance Committee took the initiative to ensure that all relevant technical staff—including System Developers, System and LMS Administrators—were made aware of their responsibilities under this new regulation. This training opportunity was extended across all faculties to maximize its impact.
A comprehensive workshop on the PDP Act was conducted by Dr. Thusitha Abeysekara, Head of the Legal Studies Unit, FMSC, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. The session offered valuable insights into the legal, procedural, and practical aspects of the Act, equipping participants with the knowledge required to maintain institutional compliance.
The event was organized collaboratively by the Faculty IT Governance Committee, under the leadership of its Chair Prof. Lasith Gunawardena, in partnership with the Staff Development Centre headed by Prof. Saman Yapa.
